The Frank Erwin Center was a 500,000-square foot, six-story multipurpose arena built in 1977 on 13 acres at the southeast end of the University of Texas campus. The demolition of the Erwin Center and the adjacent Denton Cooley Pavilion basketball training facility will make way for a UT academic medical center that includes a UT specialty hospital and a MD Anderson Cancer Center. The demolition project, which is budgeted at $25 million, is currently under budget and ahead of schedule. The structure will be gone by early summer, and the project will fully complete with grading and groundwork in September. The demolition was done conventionally using construction equipment, instead of explosives, for safety purposes. Eighty percent of material will be recycled.
