Smoke Description

Descriptive text narrative for smoke/dust observed in satelite imagery through Aug. 1, 2024, 4:03 p.m.

SMOKE:
Canada/Northeastern United States/Atlantic Ocean - Mixed density smoke attributed to wildfire activity across western and central Canada was seen spreading from British Columbia, to western and northern Alberta, northern Saskatchewan, northern-central Manitoba, Ontario and central Quebec, reaching New England and Newfoundland, and also extending further to the east over the Atlantic ocean. A pocket of moderate-density was found over southeastern Ontario, while heavy smoke plumes were observed off wildfires southeastern British Columbia and southwestern Alberta.

California/Pacific Northwest - Multiple wildfires continue to burn across the Pacific Northwest including the Park Fire in northern California and several more sites in central Oregon and Washington states. Moderate-to-heavy density smoke blanketed northern California, the majority of Oregon, and southern Washington, with smoke plumes dispersing towards the north-northeast.

Southern United States - Widespread seasonal burning was observed along the southern United States resulting in light smoke presence across the region.

DUST: A small areas of light Saharan dust could be seen traveling westward across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, while another patch of light Saharan dust was seen approaching the Lesser Antilles coming from the central Atlantic region.

FAQs

What is the smoke in the atmosphere from wildfires? ›

Wildfire smoke is a mixture of hazardous air pollutants, such PM2.5, NO2, ozone, aromatic hydrocarbons, or lead.

How high does wildfire smoke travel? ›

The higher the smoke reaches, the farther the smoke can travel. In some cases, this smoke can form an explosive storm cloud called Pyrocumulonimbus. These explosive clouds can launch the smoke even higher, reaching over 5 miles above the surface of the earth into the stratosphere.

Can you smell smoke from wildfires? ›

When trees, branches and leaves — also known as biomass — are burned in wildfires, they emit gases called volatile organic compounds. And when these compounds are first emitted, some react quickly and create that recognizable smoke smell typically associated with a campfire.

Can wildfire smoke cause rain? ›

Heavy smoke from fires in the Amazon can interfere with cloud formation and rain. Clouds of smoke don't necessarily bring clouds of rain.
